What is sports injury prevention?

Sports injury prevention refers to all efforts to prevent injuries in connection with sports and physical activity. These efforts can be done at individual, group or society level.

How to prevent sports injuries?

PRIMARY PREVENTION

  • The direct and indirect sports injury prevention comes at an individual level
  • Medical screenings: Consult your specialist (sports doctor or sports physiotherapist)
  • Protective measures: Appropriate physical preparation by specialist
  • Protective equipment: In contact sports (boxing, karate, taekwondo...) and team sports (Football, basket...)
  • Flexibility and strength: Must be programmed (will be developed in a later stage)
  • Nutrition: Rules of intake

SECONDARY PREVENTION at a group level

  • Rules: Respect of the rules the game
  • Agreements: Decision of individuals about a sport event
  • Information: Lectures about known risk factors of injuries from a Specialist
  • Education: knowledge, campaign (Read our Weekly Tips)

TERTIARY PREVENTION at a society level

  • Society planning: Sports helping against diseases
    • Political decision of building a new safe sports environment
    • Decisions of preventing lung cancer, atherosclerosis...
  • Legislation: i.e. high pricing cigarettes and low pricing fruits and vegetables
  • Budget: Planning
  • Investments: could be governmental or individuals effort
